Medical Quick Reference
Forall Systems developed a quick reference and decision support tool for healthcare professionals in a point-of-care
setting. The product originally consisted of medical information databases (documents) that were read by a third-party,
propriety document reader. Forall Systems worked together with another consulting firm to design a new, modular system
of applications that would meet their current and future needs.
At the center of the new system is the Document Manager Application (DMA), which serves as the central point of
interaction for the user as well as the other applications within the product. The DMA, in conjunction with a
web-based subscription ordering mechansim, allows the user to register their product subscriptions on their
handhelds and enforces document security.
A new Document Reader and Parser were created by customizing an open-source suite of programs that provide an
off-line web browser for PalmOS systems, giving the client complete control over the user-interface and
functionality while minimizing development time and costs. The new Parser also has the ability to create incremental
updates, which can be applied to documents via the DMA, minimizing the time required for user downloads.
We reduced download time and increased usability by breaking out parts of the document
content into separate applications, which can then be updated and distributed independently.
